Caprica, a brief review

Caprica through a fan's eyes.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!
It is Friday, January 22 and a new series will be premiering tonight on SyFy. This new show is Caprica, a spin-off from the Battlestar Galactica series. Many of us Battlestar fans purchased the un-rated version of the show many months ago. I like many others have had mixed reactions to the show but have enjoyed it and can not wait to see where Ronald Moore will take us. My overall feeling of the show is better than average, but not quite where I wanted the show to take us.
Caprica starts off with the a very dramatic virtual party that will have to be severely edited even for a cable broadcast. There is a good amount of nudity, sex, and graphic violence that really draws us into the perversion of mankind. You also get a good view of the avatar and start to learn about what I would refer to as a downloaded soul. After that you get the typical learning of the characters and the tragedy that brings Adams/Adama together with the creator of the cylons. You do get to meet a young William Adams/Adama and learn the history of the family throughout the show. This was one of my favorite parts of the show and enjoyed the development of a character that is loved in the re-imagined Battlestar series.
The one god development was also well done and it was nice to see Ronald Moore explain how the Cylons first developed that concept, while making that a terrorist type group. As a father I can show sympathy towards both fathers and can understand both points of view. Adams daughter was excellently portrayed as was the reactions of both father and daughter during the avatar scene. I personally would have had the same reactions and hope that I would not be so obsessed with my loss and my work to put my child's soul into a cylon.
I had hoped to see more familiar faces involved but am sure that that will come as the series progresses. Overall the special effects were excellent along with the acting, there was not a weak cast member in the show. This is a very violent and sexual show with some slow spots but the acting and writing pulled it out. I would recommend Caprica to all Battlestar fans from the original to the latest series, as well as fans of Science Fiction and drama. This is not a show for children, toss in a disc from the original Battlestar Galactica series in a different room while you enjoy Caprica.
